Full Moon Atlas: Sector D-3
Mare Insularum/Copernicus
Dominated by vast Copernicus (left of
center), the sector features ambling Mare Insularum
(roughly 900 km in diameter, covering much of the lower half of the
photo), Sinus Aestuum (upper right) and the southern
portion of Mare Imbrium (top left). Insularum, it should be
noted, is one of the "newest" of the Lunar seas, having
received its official designation by the International
Astronomical Union in 1976.
